Abstract: In the last years, the multilevel inverters have been used increasingly in renewable energy systems (photovoltaic and wind) and speed control systems of three-phase electric motors. Recently, several control techniques of multilevel inverters have emerged including multilevel inverters with different modulations to improve the harmonic content. Have been proposed different control strategies that allow decreasing the operating frequency maintaining minimal total harmonic distortion. This lecture deals with some of the techniques used to improve multilevel inverters, such as: a) An optimized modulation with minimal harmonic content, using a control loop that allows obtaining optimum power quality to complying the IEEE standards b) A multiobjective optimization algorithm to determine modulations with voltage vs. frequency ratio that reduces the output voltage as the frequency decreases, keeping the total harmonic distortion close to 0% in the entire operating frequencies range. In addition, some of the research results of the author and his colleagues that have been conducted in recent years are also discussed.
