Agenda 2030 and Municipal Climate Change Adaptation (An Example from the Czech Republic)

Abstract: Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, which is composed into 17th so called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was endorsed by UN member states in September 2015. In those agenda the UN firstly acknowledged the key role of municipalities in the development because the agenda should solve problems whose are mainly local. There is impossible to tackle those problems without active participation of municipalities because only municipalities have sources and abilities how to improve administration or plan and realize solution on the local level. Towards town and cities is focused the Goal No. 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities which have a number sub-goals and targets. One of those targets is focused on increasing the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters. As an example from three municipalities in the Czech Republic (Hradec Králové, Žďár nad Sázavou and Dobruška) will be demonstrate complex municipal strategy for climate change adaptaion.

Brief Biography of the Speaker: Research and teaching staff, whose main place is at College of Regional Development in Prague, Czech Republic, where she is also the vice-rector for research an the head of Department of Regional Development. Graduate of Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology (1989 - 1994), then at the same school, she defended doctoral dissertation in the field of Urbanism (2000) and also doctorate work in the same field (2003). Furthermore, she studied extraordinarily social geography at the Faculty of Charles University in Prague (2000-2002). Since her studies, she moves between academics and practice. She served as principal architect of the city of Hradec Kralove (1997-1999) and as an expert on strategic development of this city (2000-2003). Since 2004, she is a member of the city council of Hradec Kralove city with responsibility for town planning and urban development. She publishes regularly in many journals, and lectured at professional conferences in Czech Republic and abroad. She worked on a number of research projects in the field of area planning and strategic development e.g. Suburbanization-operation thread of (small) cities, Reconversion and military revitalization of brownfields. Newly she focused on Climate change impact to the cities, sustainability and urban security.
