Abstract: It is common to hear some people to mention that they are emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted due to excessive and prolonged stress to what they are exposed to in their workplace. These symptoms, which characterize the burnout state according to health experts, occur in several activity sectors (as Health, Education and Services) and have been increasing in Portugal lately. Based on a sample obtained from a survey of thousands of workers in one of these sectors, we statistically analyse some ordinal variables, in Likert-type scale.
In particular, based on application of Exploratory Factor Analysis we extract two factors, with eigenvalue greater-than-one, which correspond to a total variance explained of almost 60%. The first latent factor can be labelled as the “burnout state”, once the five variables with the highest weight are emotional exhaustion, physical exhaustion, anxiety, angry and the feeling that work needs too much energy that affects negatively the private life, which are considered by medical doctors very useful in clinical judgment to identify a burnout state.

Brief Biography of the Speaker: Luis Miguel Grilo (PhD in Mathematics and Statistics, Technical University of Lisbon, 2006) is currently Adjunct Professor and Director of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, as well as Director of Surveys and Statistical Studies Center of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (PIT) and Director of a Post Graduation in Computational Data Analysis. As a member of the Center for Mathematics and Applications of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (CMA FCT-UNL), develops scientific research in Distributions Theory (exact and near-exact distributions of some statistics used in Multivariate Analysis) and Statistics Applications (with special interest in Health). Publishes papers regularly in international scientific journals and has made several presentations at national and international meetings of Statistics, including as an Invited Speaker, receiving the "Best presentation award", in the PhD student category, with a paper presented at the International Conference on Statistics, Combinatorics and Related Areas and X Conference of the Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (SCRA2003|FIMX), University of Southern Maine, USA. At the moment, is Academic editor of the British Journal of Mathematics & Computer Science, member of the Editorial Board of the Asian Journal of Mathematics and Computer Research, as well as of the Journal of Advances in Management Sciences and Information Systems and member of the board of CLAD (Portuguese Association of Classification and Data Analysis).
