Controlling Risk in Dynamic Systems

Associate Professor Calin I. Ciufudean

Department of Automatics and Computers

Abstract: We consider this discussion important, as there is a lot of confusion about the cohabitation of the risk and optimum control of dynamic systems. Thinking of risk and analysis of reliability of dynamic systems from a probabilistic perspective, we come to the conclusion that probability is a measure of expressing uncertainty about the process seen through the point of view of the assessor (i.e. the controller of a process), and based on some background information and knowledge that we have at the time we quantify our uncertainty.
It is, however, not obvious how such a thinking should be implemented in practice, in a decision making context, and different frameworks can be established. Our framework emphasises the so-called observable quantities and their prediction. Interesting quantities for risk and reliability analysis of a dynamic system are the performances of that system, for example measured by production, production loss, number of fatalities, etc. A discrete event model will be used for dealing with the above mentioned issues, and an example flexible manufacturing system analysis will emphasize our model. Future development of the proposed model will be also considered.
