Plenary Lecture

Connected Vehicles; Communications Infrastructure and Security

Professor Tarek Saadawi
Center for Information Networking & Telecommunications (CINT)
Dept. of Electrical Engineering
City University of New York, City College

Abstract: Today’s modern cars are pervasively computerized and controlled by a heterogeneous combination of digital components, referred to as electronic Control units, ECUs. Each vehicle may have between 20 to 100 ECUs. With the deployment of the wireless technology, the vehicle of the future will potentially be vulnerable to cyber-attacks and precautions need to be implemented early. Cyber-attacks on connected cars and connected trucks that are largely computer controlled can bring chaos to the roads. This talk will address the WAVE (wireless access vehicular environment) standard and its wireless infrastructure vulnerability. We will discuss also the denial of service attacks on the WAVE technology, how to detect such attack, and how to mitigate its effect on the communications infrastructure.

Brief Biography of the Speaker: TAREK SAADAWI is the Director of the Center for Information Networking and Telecommunications (CINT) and a professor at the City University of New York, City College). Dr. Saadawi has published extensively in the area of information networks and network security. He is a co-editor of the book “Cyber Infrastructure Protection,” Strategic Study Institute, volume 1, May 2011, Volume 2 May 2013, and volume 3 (expected 2016), and the lead author of the book, Fundamentals of Telecommunication Networks,” John Wiley & Sons, 1994 (which has been translated into Chinese). His most recent work has focused on network security, the vulnerability of wireless networks, denial of service attacks and mitigation strategy, resilient routing protocols for ad-hoc wireless network, connected vehicles security, and smart grid vulnerability analysis and its intrusion detection schemes.
