Abstract:
The paper discusses the behavior of beams with
external nonlocal damping patches. Unlike ordinary local damping models, the
nonlocal damping force is modeled as a weighted average of the velocity field
over the spatial domain, determined by a kernel function based on distance
measures. The performance with respect to eigenvalues is discussed in order to
avoid resonance. The optimization is performed by determining the location of
patches from maximizing eigenvalues or gap between them.
Brief Biography of the Speaker:
Veturia Chiroiu (born in 1942) received the PhD degree in Mathematics from
University of Bucharest in 1981. Since 1966 she is a senior scientific
researcher at the Institute of Solid Mechanics of the Romanian Academy, head of
Department of Deformable Media (www.imsar.ro). She received a Fulbright
Fellowship to work at the Princeton University, Dept. of Aerospace and
Mechanical Science (1972–1973), and has led various research projects
(Copernicus, NATO) and lectured in foreign institutes and universities. She is
author of numerous research articles in referee journals and international
conferences, covering dynamics of deformable media, acoustics, intelligent
structures and materials, and inverse problems. She is the winner of the prize
Aurel Vlaicu of the Romanian Academy in 1997. Since 2000 she is a PhD advisor in
the field of mechanical engineering at the Romanian Academy. Since 2004 she is
an Honorific Member of the Technical Sciences Academy of Romania (ASTR).
