CORFU ISLAND, GREECE

The conference will be held in the 5-Star Hotel: CORFU HOLIDAY PALACE (former member of the HILTON chain of hotels) well-known for its international reputation. Having decided to visit Corfu, one of the most interesting islands of the Ionian sea, prepare yourself for an unparalleled experience. An amalgam of natural beauties, traditional features and archaeological sites. Corfu island lies to the north of the Ionian sea at the entrance of Adriatic. It is the second largest island in the group known as the Seven Islands, or Eptanisa. Corfu is the island of miracles and wonders, where every moment the scene changes without affecting the harmony of the terrain.

Undoubtedly the most beautiful of the Ionian islands if not all the islands in Greece, Corfu or Kerkyra is lush, green and covered with lemon and orange groves. Corfu has two sides, one is that of an escape into an exquisite serenity of natural beauty while the other is that of fun and entertainment against a backdrop of long beaches and blue waters, cafes, taverns, bars, discos, nightclubs and casinos. Its history along with the natural beauty of the island have made it the ideal spot for holidays and has been a popular resort since the beginning of tourism. Corfu is connected with Athens by plane. (1 hour and 10 minutes).

 


Corfu or Kerkyra, the capital of the island ( 36,293 inhabitants ) is one of the most impressive towns in Greece. It demonstrates not only an excellent natural habital but also interesting monuments of history and art. It is divided into : 1) the old town with the venetian buildings and those of the English order, the mansions 2) the modern town.

The sights are:
  • The famous Lion of Menecrates - it is one of the most important Corinthean work of arts ( at the end of the 7th cent. B.C. )

  • The ancient Market and the public baths in Palaeopalis

  • The shrine of Apollo of Corfu, who was the settler God of the island

  • Alkinoas port in Anemomylos ( Windmill ) in the south of Corfu. It was excavated in 1965

  • The old Fort. The name of the island was taken after its double tops ( Koryfes ). It is identified with the history of Corfu. The fort is connected to the town with a bridge. One of the nicest churches is situated with in the fort. It is the basilica of St. George built by the English

  • The new Fort. It was built by the Venetians ( 1570 - 1580 ). It is one of the most beautiful forts in the world. The underground galleries were used for shelters during the War. The monument of Menecrates ( 1600 B.C. ) is on the bay of Garitsa

  • The Palace ( 1823 ) in the central square. It was the residence of the English Commisioner in Corfu. It had been used as a royal residence since 1864. Nowadays, the Sinojapan Museum, the Archaeological Service, the Library and the General Secretariat of the Ionian Islands. Area are found there .

  • The Town Hall - one of the most beautiful Venetian building. It was built in 1663. It is known as San Jiacomo.

    In the 17th cent, it served for the club of aristocrats. In the 19th cent, it was turned into a theatre. In 1903 it was first used as the Town Hall

  • The old building of the Prefecture (1842) - it is a significant architectural sample of the English occupation.

    It was built in the 19th cent, on the site of the house Kapodistrices was born in. Nowadays it is used as a Department of the Ioanian University - the foreign languages and translation Department

  • The Byzantine churches of St Jason and St Socipatrus (12th cent) in the area of Anemonylus

  • The church of the patron St Spyridon (1589). The metropolitan church of the island is tat of Santa Theodora

  • The basilica of palaeopolis (5th cent ) is the oldest Christian monument on the island. It has got integrated pieces of a dorian temple

  • Sts Theodori monastery and the remnants of a temple and an altar of Diana (6th cent B.C.)

  • The Archaeological Museum in the area of Tenis. It includes findings from excavations all over the island, such as small objects of the Prehistorical Period, archaic pots and earthenware statuettes, other objects made of copper, parts of temples gables, an archaic lion, classical and postclassical sculptures etc

  • The Museum of the Asian Art. It includes works of the Chinese and Japanese art - it was founded as the Sinojapan Museum (1929). It is situated in the Old Fort. The exhibits are from the Chinese art of the Neolithic times to the Ming Dynasty art, Japanese books (18th cent 0 19th cent ) etc

  • Getting out of the Museum, the visitor can see Contra Forca - the canal that stands between the Fort and the town

  • The museum of the Fighters for the liberation of the island which is situated in the building of the Ionian Parliament. This is the place where the Union with Greece was declared in 1863

  • It includes a collection of portraits, newspapers of 1848 - 1864 and other documents about the struggle of the inhabitants for the Union

  • The Museum of Dionysius Solomos. The house of the poet was turned into a Museum including portraits, busts and poets personal abjects

  • The Library in the Ionian University. It includes 10.000 volumes concerning different branches of science. 7.000 modern books and 2600 volumes - the latter are Politis donation

  • Anemomylos ( Windimill) - a sobered

  • Mount Repo - the summer residence of the English commissioner. It is 3 km away from the town

Gastouri

It is a picturesque village with 550 inhabitants. It is 11,5 km to the south of Corfu.

The sights are:

  • The famous Achilleon - 2 km away from the village - which is the mansion of Gueen Elizabeth.
  • It was built at the end of the 19th cent. It is decorated with Murals and statues of Renaissance. The famous statue of Achilles dying is in the garden. It is a work of the German sculptor Cherter. Later on, the mansion was bought by the emperor of German. Nowadays it belongs to the Greek state. The first floor has been turned into a museum. The Casino is on the second floor. Achilleon overlooks the north east park of the island.

  • The churches of Panagia the Leader, St. Marciaanus, St Nicholas, the Archangels, Santa Kyriaci. The latter is 500 m away from the village. Queen Elizabeth was the one who had the village built.

Gouvia

It used to be Venetians nany yard. It is a coastal settlement which has nowadays been developed into a touristic center. Gouvia is 9 km away from Corfu. The inhabitants are 600.
